Just Don't Call Her Generous

I have a "thing" about telling Evie she's pretty. Because I have such a hang-up about my looks, I want to teach her beauty is more than your physical appearance. So when I tell her she's beautiful (about a million times a day,) I also tell her other qualities she has that I admire.

Me: Evie you are so beautiful! And smart. You are smart. Smart means you know a lot.
Evie: Smart!
Me: And you are also kind. Kind means you are nice to other people.
Evie: Kind!
Me: And you are so generous. Generous means you SHARE with others who don't have what you have.
Evie: No! No! No!

Still working on the sharing thing...

What a cute little snapshot into Evie's personality. I remember you talking about the same issue at work, and I think this was before I had Avery, & I didn't quite get it. But now, having a daughter myself, I understand the pressures she will face and try to prepare her for them. Also, when it comes to compliments, I try to be really specific. Rather than saying "good job" after everything she does, I say, "You did so and so really well," so she understands the difference between excelling and just being told your great for no reason. Does that make sense? Sometimes I think I come up with weird ways to teach and praise Baby A, but so far they seem to be working. Keep us in your prayers. :)

Oh how I remember that with my son. It does work as now he does share quite well.

Thanks for the laugh!

Don't worry Evie, I failed sharing in Kindergarten too! Now I have to share everything with my husband, my girls, my nieces & nephew, as well as my cats! Everyone has to eat or drink what I have. It must taste better because it's mine!

I love how their little minds work! I wish I'd written down all these funny sayings as my kids were growing up. Where were blogs 16 years ago anyway?

Haha! This is hilarious! Funny how they pick on those words they don't want to hear and then make sure you know how they feel about them. :)
